Canon RP vs Fuji X-H1

Honest opinion

Say that I would never have played with the Canon RP or even the Fuji X-H1: is it possible to draw a conclusion with “on paper only data”? After all, people do it all the time for cameras!

Now that both are the same price – roughly $1300 CAD on Amazon Canada for the Canon RP and $1300 but with a battery grip for the X-H1so which one offer the best value? The best image quality?

Cut to the chase: Fuji X-H1, like it’s not even the same league.

The Canon RP offer 4 frames per second with autofocus. The Fuji X-H1? 11 FPS with tracking.
The Canon has no weather sealing, where the Fuji is the best weather sealed Fuji ever made.
The Canon has no built-it image stabilization: The Fuji has the best IBIS on the market.
The Canon feels cheap and plasticy, where the Fuji offers a premium feel by having a made out of magnesium body.

The Fuji is the best for vloggers: the slow motion at 120 FPS is incredible. The 4k UHD is awesome (17:9).

I’m putting this short post here in case someone google “canon rp vs fuji x-h1 review”. Maybe someone is looking to travel the world in 2020 and wonders exactly what to get. Well, the X-H1 is the most obvious choice.

It isn’t that I like Fuji (actually, I went hard on their X-Pro3 product). It’s just the value is incredible.

The real competitor to a X-H1 would be a small Sony A6xxx something: Not the Canon RP. The Canon RP is a disaster of a product: But the image quality is there, for it is a full frame camera (no, you absolutely don’t need a full frame in 2019! Don’t get a m4/3 body, but don’t go crazy on the full frame rhetoric).

A wet X-H1, a certain advantage over a NON weather sealed body, such the Canon RP.

Just go in a store and try it for yourself. The difference is absurd. The Fuji is worth $3000, but sold to us at $1300CAD with 2 extra batteries and the battery grip. The Canon is worth 1600, sold to us at 1300. The value is much, much stronger for the Fuji. I don’t get paid to say my opinion, so there. Get what makes you happy.

I am a big fan of the Canon color science: It’s phenomenally good. Where Fuji makes your picture very Instagram-worthy by being cinematic right from the get-to, the Canon delivers image under the motto What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. With that being said: shooting RAW with both cameras will offer great flexibility.

The Canon RP is not a good value. If you want to go towards a full frame Canon, go get a 5D MK III, which is a professional body, weather sealed, with great FPS and autofocus (and sharp video quality, the RP is plague with a certain softness).

Here at the Most Beautiful World, I want to guide people towards the truth, towards great value, and towards the best for them. The RP cannot be recommended. There are way too many better options out there, even from the Sony side of things or Fuji. Or… Canon itself.

The X-H1 is more comparable to the 1Dx: that’s just the league it is on.

The web is filled with pretentious camera reviewers trying to please the big corporations in exchange of free trips or free gear. I don’t do that here. This is pure straight non-bullshit content.

If you got a $1500 budget and you want to be a vlogger, a Canon M50 might be a better option for you, or even the new Canon 90D (which happens to be awesome). The RP was a marketing gimmick that needs to disappear: it was made for the investors, not for the photographers. If you need/want full frame, got get a 6D Mark II or a 5D Mark III.

Cheers,
JP
