The Most Beautiful World

Why I chose to live my life without cellphone.

I am a millennial. I am 27 years old.

And I haven’t had a SIM card for the last 4 years. I travelled the world with my Jeep and my backpack – and I only got a SIM card for two months in the last 4 years (for a business that I was trying to get started…).

Not having a cellphone is the reward to have made it to the top: you could not pay me enough to have one. Being a free man is the best thing. I enjoy getting lost in the traffic (I drove Alaska to Argentina without a phone). I enjoy asking for directions. I enjoy the feeling of freedom. When I’m in a car, I can’t talk to anyone nor text nor check anything. Isn’t the best?

I don’t know what’s a life with a cellphone. I have two phones: both to read books and surf the web when I have wifi.

I get asked a lot “what’s your phone number?”, and I say that I don’t have one.
”What do you mean, you don’t have a cell!?”.

No. I don’t.

I don’t have a cellphone and it is the best!
Whoooaaa.

Yes. People are amazed… but it isn’t a very hard thing to do. Cancel your phone plan. Voila. No more phone.

Yes, sometimes it would be great to have a cellphone, but at the same time, I look at everybody on the sidewalk or in some pubs and they all have their faces glued to a telescreen, a la 1984. It all seems very insane to me.

One time I took the wrong turn in Mexico. I got lost. It took me 3 hours to get back to where I supposed to be. I ended having the best time ever.

I got lost today, again. Was trying to find the house of someone selling a W140. No GPS. Just the map on google maps on my ipad, trying to find my direction with landmarks. I lost his address too, so I ended just driving around his area until I saw a W140.

I don’t have a phone. I take my pictures with a Canon 1D Mark IV when I’m in a pub. It’s giant, but it does the trick.

I would say that success is 1) drinking coconuts in Brazil, on a quiet beach 2) not having a cellphone and not caring about the world falling down.

I have chosen to not live my life with a phone because I decided to live my life as a player one: fully aware of the moment, fully immersed in my surroundings. And that, that right there, that is the gold.

Cheers,

JP
